The Baie Verte Asbestos Mines
We have helped several clients that worked for Johns Manville at The Baie Verte Asbestos Mines. The Baie Verte asbestos deposits were discovered in 1955, and Advocate Mines, a division of Johns-Manville began an open-pit mine there in 1963. There are stories of the strong winds that would blow the dust all over the locals nearby. It is likely everyone in the area has exposure to asbestos. Many of the miners were eligible for worker’s compensation and recovered compensation, but possibly were eligible for much greater compensation through the Asbestos Trusts. Additionally, the people in the towns that did not work at the mine, but were subjected to asbestos dust from the mine were not eligible for worker’s compensation. Wabush Mines Limited – Scully Iron Mine
We have also helped out workers from the Wabush Mines Limited, in Labrador. The Scully Mine is an Iron mine that would send iron across Quebec to steel plants for manufacturing. Iron is used in the steel-making process. The ore at the Scully Mine was mined in open pits, broken up and classified. It would be dried by large drying units and sent to separators where it was concentrated and turned into finished material. The workers at Scully that were exposed to asbestos were likely working in the processing buildings. They used high heat dryers that contained asbestos insulation. Additionally, many of the buildings were insulated with asbestos materials.
